New Scholarships Available

Vancouver Restaurant Scholarship - $500 (Deadline:  May 30, 2012)

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:
1.        Be between the ages of 15-21, as of the May 30, 2012 deadline
2.       Be a full time student  in 2012 in either High School or College/University
3.       Answer the essay questions found on the application page.

Healthy Lifestyles Scholarship- $5000 (Deadline:  May 30, 2012)

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:
1.        As of May 30, 2012 deadline, be under 25 years of age
2.       Be currently a senior in high school or in your first year of university or college

Big Dig Scholarship - $3,000 (Deadline:  June 1, 2012)

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:
1.        You must be currently in Grade 12 and entering into your first year of college/university in 2012 or be currently in your first or second year.
2.       Submit an essay that is under 1000 words by the stated deadline.

Man Mac Automatic Scholarship -  $500 (Deadline: June 15, 2012)

To be considered eligible for the Man Mac Automatic Transmission Scholarship a student must meet the following criteria:
1.        Be enrolled or expect to be enrolled in an undergraduate program by the fall of 2012.  The school you attend must be located within Canada or the United States.

Aaron Coyle Award

Attentions Seniors:



The Aaron Coyle Award is presented each year to a member of the greater Johnstown High School graduating class in honor and remembrance of Aaron Coyle. 

Aaron Coyle was a member of the graduating class of 2001 who was murdered one evening in Moxham before he could graduate. 

The Moxham Ministerium presents the award to a graduating senior who is continuing on to some form of post-high school education. 

The award is given to a graduate whose life exemplifies the noblest of human values: faith, hope, love and friendship, and in recognition of his or her willingness to give of his or her time, energy, and talents to affirm the goodness of life. 

This is not an academic award. The award’s cash value is sent to the recipient’s school of higher education where he or she will attend in the upcoming academic year.

Your application must be given to your guidance counselor by May 10th, 2012.

1st Summit Bank Scholarship

Attention students:


1st Summit Bank is offering a $2500.00 GH Miller Scholarship.

Students must be registered as a full-time college student for the 2012 fall term at a Pennsylvania based institution, to be eligible for the scholarship.

The scholarship is to be used for tuition purposes only.

The winner will be determined by a random drawing held on July 2nd, 2012 from all applications submitted.

PSSA Graduation Requirement

Attention Senior students who have not met the PSSA graduation requirements:


An approved alternative assessment will be administered on Wednesday the 25th of April at 7:50 in the cafeteria.

A tutoring session specifically designed for the test will given through After School Live for Reading and Math.

The dates for Math are April 19th and 23rd. The dates for Reading are April 20th and 24th. Please contact Cyndi Ahlborn in room A228.

Graduation is approaching very quickly. As a reminder, scoring proficient on the PSSA in Reading and Math or an approved alternative assessment is a school board policy.

It is highly recommended that you attend the tutoring sessions.

NAACP Scholarship

The Johnstown Branch of the NAACP is offering (2) $500 Scholarships to students actively involved in the community. If you are taking the initiative to make your community a better place, submit an essay telling your story. The essay must be 500 words, and you must include your name, address, phone number, email and grade. Completed essays should be submitted via mail to Johnstown Unit NAACP #2266 P.O. Big J Scholarship

Any student that would like to apply for the Big J Scholarship that meets the criteria listed below should see Mr. Deater for an application. The application deadline is April 10th.

1. Student is a senior graduating in the year the award is given
2. Student participated in one or more Big J organizations
3. Student must have a 2.0 or better GPA
4. The Student plans to attend post-secondary education. This could
include any post secondary school: college, Trade School, Vo-Tech, etc.
5. The scholarship is payable only to the school, bookstore, or other
resource site necessary for the student’s education.

The Faith in Community Award

The Faith in Community Award is presented to a member of the graduating class whose life of faith is exemplified by his or her willingness to give of his or her time, energy, and talents to benefit others. This is not an academic award. The award's cash value of $500 is given directly to the recipient with hopes that it will also benefit others. Students of any faith are invited to apply.
The deadline is April 25th.

Tom Beard Memorial Scholarship

The Windber Moose Riders Lodge 349

is pleased to announce the availability of a
Tom Beard Memorial Scholarship


This scholarship which honors the past administrator and friend to many, Tom Beard, will be awarded to a college or technical school bound applicant who has demonstrated exceptional community and volunteer spirit. Tom exemplified these characteristics and we would like to continue his legacy by having an annual scholarship in honor and memory of him.

Eligibility:

Any graduating high school senior who intends to attend a college or technical school
Applicants need not be related to any member of the Moose
Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale (If school uses other grading system, student must have C+ or better)
A short essay (500 words) regarding the importance of volunteer and community spirit will need to be submitted.

Applicants will be judged on grades, leadership and community involvement. Deadline for application is June 15, 2012.

IU-8 Test

Attention 12th Grade Students:

An IU-8 test will be given on February 29th. This test is an approved alternative assessment to meet the PSSA graduation requirement in Reading and Math.

Also, there is a tutoring session scheduled on February 23rd and 27th for Math and the 24th and 28th for Reading.

These tutoring sessions are specifically designed for the IU-8 test.

There is a high success rate of students who have attended these sessions.

IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY.

National Federation of the Blind Scholarship

Harvey & Katherine Supowitz Educational Scholarship

The Johnstown Salvation Army is now accepting applications for the Harvey & Katherine Supowitz Educational Scholarship. Students awarded the scholarship will be invited to the Johnstown Salvation Army's Annual Civic Dinner in May.

The Scholarship primarily is need-based and will be awarded to students enrolled in or intending to be enrolled in college, university, trade school or other such programs. Weight will be afforded to the applicant's community service including service to or through the Salvation Army.

IU-8 Testing

Attention 12th Grade Students:

There will be an IU-8 test in Reading and Math administered on 1/13/12 at 7:50 am. in the cafeteria.

This test meets the PSSA testing requirements for graduation.

There will be a tutoring session specifically designed for the IU-8 test after school starting Monday January 9th through Thursday January 12th. Please contact Jennifer in room A228.

It is highly recommended that students attend the tutoring sessions.

If successful completion of your PSSA testing graduation requirement has not been verified by Mr. Mulvehill, you need to contact him in the guidance office ASAP.
