Powerschool Mobile Apps – Coming Soon

In a continued effort to strengthen and reinforce the lines of communication between the school and home, the Greater Johnstown School District is excited to share the following information regarding the expansion of Powerschool access to mobile phones through the Apple IPhone device.
“In January 2012, Pearson will launch two new mobile apps: PowerSchool for Parents and PowerSchool for Students.
These new apps will allow parents and students to access all the same information they would normally access from a browser, but with the ease and convenience of an app installed on their Apple mobile device.
Automatic login, a family overview, simplified "one-thumb" browsing, and other features make accessing PowerSchool on the go faster and easier than ever before.
The apps will be FREE and available for download from the Apple iTunes App Store. Version 1.0 of the apps will be supported on any Apple iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad running iOS version 4.0 or higher.”

JHS – College Financial Aid Night – November 15th at 5:30pm!

On November 15th, JHS will conduct a Financial Aid Night in the Cochran Auditorium starting at 5:30. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to attend to learn how to make college a reality for your child. Representatives from PHEAA, Trojan College Access and various universities and colleges will be in attendance to answer questions.

Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Board Scholarship

Pennsylvania Highlands Community College is now accepting applications for the Board Scholarship.

Criteria:
-Be a high school senior eligible for graduation with a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 in core academic subjects.
-Be recognized as a good citizen of the high school community by being involved in at least one extra-curricular activity and by demonstrating leadership.
-Complete the admissions process and be admitted to Pennsylvania Highlands Community College.
-Compose an essay of at least 200 words explaining why he or she has chosen to attend Pennsylvania Highlands Community College.
-Complete the 2011-2012 Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Applications are due to Pennsylvania Highlands no later than November 23, 2011.

Civil Service

In an effort to educate and better serve our young citizens, the State Civil Service Commission is pleased to announce a new resource just added to their website. Now available online is a PowerPoint presentation with accompanying audio that describes civil service employment opportunities in a variety of occupational categories and disciplines. This presentation includes a wealth of useful information designed to expose Pennsylvania’s secondary school students to the diversity and depth of employment opportunities available with the Commonwealth.

To access the presentation, follow these easy steps:
• Visit our website at www.scsc.state.pa.us .
• Select the "Job Seekers" tab from the homepage (this is the third option in the silver bar at the top of the page).
• Select "State and Local Government Career Opportunities" from the left navigation menu.
• Choose "Job Opportunities for Graduates," which is the sixth title on the left navigation menu.
• Choose the link titled “Secondary School PowerPoint Presentation with Audio” to start viewing the program. The presentation will open in a separate window and the sound will begin immediately, so please be sure that your speakers are powered on. The slides and audio are set to advance automatically. The duration of the slideshow is approximately 16 minutes.

All Academies Night

Congressman Critz will host an All Academies Night for current high school sophomores and juniors. This evening is designed for students interested in the possibility of attending any of our military academies. The challenges of entry and the benefits of graduating from such a prestigious institution will be highlighted.

This year it will be held at the Napa/Sonoma Gallery at the Holliday Inn in Johnstown, on October 20,2011, from 6:30p.m.-8:30p.m. Light finger food will be provided. Please RSVP to 1-800-289-2642.

Mercy Presidential Scholarship

Mount Alloysius College is offering 30 competitive scholarships. $40,000 is dispersed over a four-year period.

Essay Contest

The Fleet Reserve Association is sponsoring an essay contest. The topic is “What Freedom of Speech means to me.” The grand prize is a $10,000 savings bond, plus 18 national awards and regional and local prizes. All entries must be postmarked no later than December 1st, 2011. If you have any questions or would like to receive an entry form, please see your counselor.

Outstanding Young Woman

Applications are now being accepted for this year’s Outstanding Young Woman Scholarship Program. In addition to being a fun filled, learning experience, the Outstanding Young Woman program awards its winner a cash scholarship and over $30,000 in tuition scholarship assistance from various colleges and universities. Any Junior Class girl interested in participating in this year’s Outstanding Young Woman Scholarship Program can pick up an application in the Guidance Office. Wendy’s High School Heisman

Students in the 2012 graduating class may apply online (www.wendysheisman.com), and will be judged on their academic achievements, athletic accomplishments, community-leadership, and involvement in extracurricular activities. Applications are due October 2, 2011.

Welding Scholarship Available

The owners of JWF Industries have established a memorial scholarship in honor of their father, John J. Polacek, Senior. In partnership with Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, the first annual John J. Polacek, Senior Memorial Scholarship will be available to new and currently enrolled students in the Welding Technology Program.
Two years of full-time tuition will be awarded (worth $8,470.00 for Cambria County Residents) for an undetermined amount of recipients. The recipient must be able to commute and work for JWF in Johnstown during summer and winter breaks. Following their graduation, the recipient agrees to a minimum 12 month work commitment after graduation. The recipient must have and maintain a 3.0GPA to be eligible.

Dual Enrollment credits Through Penn Highlands Community College (also known as Accelerated College Education (ACE))

Dual Enrollment Registration – If you are taking a course here at Johnstown High School that is eligible to Dual Enrollment credits Through Penn Highlands Community College (also known as Accelerated College Education (ACE)), you must now register online and make payment directly to Penn Highlands Community College.

Tuition is $33.00 per college credit. Students will register only one time per school year and will register for all of their courses.

Students must register and pay by September 16, 2011. Students will be responsible for sending their payment to Pennsylvania Highlands.

The following instructions will guide you through the registration process. An ACE online screen-by-screen tutorial is also available and is located at the application site.

Big J Scholarship

Big J Scholarship - Any senior athlete who has participated in a Big J organization, has a GPA of 2.0 or better, and plans to pursue post secondary education is eligible to apply for one of three Big J Scholarships. Application deadline is May 24th. Stop in the Guidance office for application details and guidlines.

Scholarship Opportunity

1st Summit Bank is offering a $2500.00 scholarship for tuition purposes only for the 2011 term. The drawing will be held on Thursday June 30th, 2011. If interested contact your guidance counselor.

IU08 Makeup Test

There will be an IU08 Make-Up Assessment Test on Wednesday, May 25th. Students will be called to the cafeteria. A reminder that scoring proficient on this test is a graduation requirement. If you have not received your scores from the last test, see Mr. Mulvehill in guidance as soon as possible.

After School Live will hold English tutoring on May 19th and May 23rd. Math tutoring will be on May 22nd and May 24th.

Final Transcripts for Seniors

Seniors – Your Final Transcripts must be requested from your Guidance Counselor and sent to the college/university or post-secondary institution that you are accepted to and plan on attending. Be sure to provide a stamped and addressed envelope to you Guidance Counselor.

$1000.00 IMAGINE-AMERICA SCHOLARSHIP

Attention Seniors: The Imagine America Scholarship Program is offering $1000.00 scholarships to students who are interested in post secondary education. Students must meet the standard admissions requirements of a participating career college to which they apply. In addition, students must have at least a 2.5 or greater GPA, a financial need and demonstrate voluntary community service during their senior year. The Buick Achiever’s Scholarship

The Buick Achiever’s Scholarship is available for eligible seniors planning to major in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics. This need based scholarship also requires the applicant to have participated in community service. Go to www.buickachievers.com for more information. Deadline is March 31,20111.

The Aaron Coyle Award

The Aaron Coyle Award is presented each year to a member of the greater Johnstown High School graduating class in honor and remembrance of Aaron Coyle.
Aaron Coyle was a member of the graduating class of 2001 who was murdered one evening in Moxham before he could graduate. The Moxham Ministerium presents the award to a graduating senior who is continuing on to some form of post-high school education. The award is given to a graduate whose life exemplifies the noblest of human values: faith, hope, love and friendship, and in recognition of his or her willingness to give of his or her time, energy, and talents to affirm the goodness of life. This is not an academic award. The award’s cash value is sent to the recipient’s school of higher education where he or she will attend in the upcoming academic year. Please see your guidance counselor if you would like to apply.

Harie/Foxco – Michael Stefan Scholarship Award

Applications are available for the Harie/Foxco – Michael Stefan Scholarship Award. Students residing in Public Housing Developments and those participating in the Housing Choice Voucher Program may apply. The application deadline is April 15th. The Student View Scholarship Program

The Student View Scholarship Program is offering $10,000 worth of scholarships to high school seniors who plan to attend a four-year college, community/junior college or career school. Log on to www.student-view.com to complete the application. The scholarship deadline is April 22, 2011.

SAT dates

There are two more dates to take the SAT. If you want to take the May 7th SAT you must register by April 8th. If you want to take the June 4th SAT you must register by May 10th.

The Cambria County Job Fair will be held on May 3, 2011 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm at the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center in downtown Johnstown. This unique event will showcase over 75 employees that are looking to hire qualified individuals in a variety of occupations. Be prepared to meet employers. Bring your resume and dress professionally.

Pittsburgh National College Fair

The Pittsburgh National College Fair will be held on February 3rd & 4th at the David L Lawrence Convention Center. Hours that the fair are open are 9:00-12:00 and 6:00-9:00 on the 3rd and only 9:00-12:00 on the 4th. The fair is free to attend. Evening hours are the least crowded. This is the largest National College Fair in the country with workshops in financial aid and the NCAA as well as college representatives from most major national colleges and area schools. They are the Pennsylvania School for Global Entrepreneurship, and the University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy. Both applications are available in the guidance office. Congress Bundestag Scholarship
