Students interested in Saint Francis University

Seniors If you are applying to St. Francis or have any interest in attending St. Francis, see Mr. Deater in the Guidance Office Immediately as there may be a significant financial incentives. Stop in the Guidance office to see Mr. Deater ASAP to discuss this opportunity of a lifetime.

Selective Service System

All young men upon reaching their 18th birthday must register for the Selective Service System. Students who fail to register may not receive federal financial aid scholarships or loans for college. Students should go to www.sss.gov to register. If you have your social security number at the time of registration, total completion time is about 5 minutes for the electronic form. Postcards for registration are also available at all post office locations.

Penn State Scholarships

The Michael Carey Memorial Scholarship is available to the two most qualified Greater Johnstown High school seniors accepted to Penn State University each year. . Preference is given first to University Park main campus applications, followed by applications to the branch campuses. Value of each scholarship is $3750 per year for four years.

Scholarship

Edgar Snyder & Associates is offering a $2500.00 scholarship to a graduating high school senior through their 5th Annual “Words to be Heard” scholarship contest. There will also be a $1000.00 2nd place and 3 runners-up who will receive scholarships of $500.00. The objective is to create a presentation that discourages underage drinking and drunk driving. Or, create a proposal to prevent distracted driving, such as texting while driving. The deadline for the presentation is March 28th, 2011. Additional Assessment Descriptions

NAEP
The National Assessment of Educational Progress is the largest continuing and nationally representative assessment of what our nation’s students know and can do in core subjects. NAEP is congressionally mandated, and first administered in 1969 to measure student achievement nationally. The results of NAEP are released as The Nation’s Report Card, and are available for the nation, states, and in some cases, urban districts. Teachers, principals, parents, policymakers, and researchers all use NAEP results to assess progress and develop ways to improve education in the United States. PSSA IU-8 Alternate Assessment Test

The PSSA IU-8 Alternative Assessment Test is considered an acceptable alternate assessment in Reading and Math for students who have not met the graduation requirement of scoring proficient or advanced on the PSSA tests.

PSSA – IU-8 Alternate Assessment

Attention 12th Grade Students- The PSSA IU-8 Alternative Assessment Test will be given on Wednesday November 17, 2010. The test is considered an acceptable alternate assessment for students who have not met the graduation requirement of scoring proficient or advanced on the PSSA tests. Also, to help students prepare for the test, the Pride and Tradition and the After School Live programs will offer an opportunity to prepare for the test. A tutoring class will be held November 9th, 10th, 15th and 16th. Students are highly encouraged to attend the sessions. To sign up for the tutoring session contact Cyndi or Jen in room A228. There is transportation available after each session. Any further questions and any student who has not signed up for the test may do so by contacting Mr. Mulvehill in the guidance office.

Educational Assistance

Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance- Assistance is available that provides benefits for the dependent spouse and children of individuals killed on active duty or those veterans who are totally disabled because of active duty injuries. In addition the new Post 9/11 GI Bill has a provision that enables current service members the ability to transfer their earned benefits to their dependents. Essay Contest

The Fleet Reserve Association is sponsoring an essay contest, for students in grades 9 thru 12. The essay must be 350 words or less on the subject “What Patriotism Means to Me”. The GRAND PRIZE is $10,000 dollars. There are also 18 National Awards and Regional and Local prizes. An application can be picked up in the guidance office. All entries must be into Mr. Mulvehill no later than November 29th, 2010.

Spring Dual Enrollment

Any student interested in taking Dual enrollment classes at Penn HighLands Community College or University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, should submit an application as soon as possible. Once accepted, you can register for courses. Courses fill up quickly, so be sure to apply early and register for your selected courses. See Mr. Deater in the Guidance office for details. Transcripts for Seniors

Seniors may request a transcript from their counselor at any time. Please be prepared to provide a stamped envelope, as well as, the address of the institution or university that you wish to have it mailed to.

• Scholarships – The Merle Agnello Scholarship worth $5,000 for students accepted to University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and the Mae Agnello Scholarship worth $1,500 are now available for application. • PTI Scholarship for DECA Members – Senior DECA members can apply for a scholarship worth up to $6,000 at Pittsburgh Technical Institute. Down load an application at www.pti.edu. Stop in the Guidance office for eligibility details. Deadline is March 4 2011.

• Pennsylvania Elk State Association is offering the Elks National Foundation 2010 Most Valuable Student Scholarship for students interested in studying secondary education. Awards range from $60,000 to $4,000. Go to www.elks.org for an application and guidelines. Stop in the Guidance office for details. Deadline is December 1, 2010
