Dual Enrollment

Reminder! Turn in your Dual Enrollment application for courses here at Johnstown High School no later than October 15. All applications and checks made payable to Penn Highlands Community College need to be turned in to Mr. Deater in the Guidance Office.

Oustanding Young Women's Scholarship

Applications are now being accepted for this year’s Outstanding Young Woman Scholarship Program. In addition to being a fun filled, learning experience, the Outstanding Young Woman program awards its winner a cash scholarship and over $30,000 in tuition scholarship assistance from various colleges and universities. Any Junior Class girl interested in participating in this year’s Outstanding Young Woman Scholarship Program can pick up an application in the Guidance Office from Miss Pavich. Also, you can print out an application online by going to the OYW website at : www.cambriasomersetoyw.org

College/Military Visits

After School Live Courses

Students are reminded that failed classes can be made up in After School Live. All completed applications MUST BE TURNED INTO YOUR COUNSELOR before being considered for enrollment.

CDT Testing

CDT testing will be given in Science and English October, 7,8 and 11. These tests are online assessments designed to provide diagnostic information to guide instruction and remediation. If you have any questions contact Mr. Mulvehill at 533-5601 ext 4001.

OPEN HOUSE

The Greater Johnstown High School will be holding a Fall Open House on Thursday, September 30th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Students along with their parents/guardians are urged to attend as information regarding student achievement and educational programs will be presented by the faculty and guidance counselors.

Representatives from Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, Mount Aloysius, Saint Francis, and Cambria Rowe will be available in the cafeteria at 5:30 p.m. to answer questions regarding college financial aid.

The goal of the GJHS administration and faculty is to provide each student with meaningful educational experiences that effectively prepare them for post-secondary education and ultimately successful attainment of rewarding personal career goals. PSSA Graduation Requirements

Based on school board policy students must complete one of the following criteria, to be eligible for graduation:


1. Students must score proficient or advanced in Reading and Math or pass an alternate assessment (Students must complete the PSSA in Reading and Math to be eligible for an alternate assessment)

2. If a student completes the PSSA in Reading and Math and doesn’t score proficient or advanced, one of the following alternate assessments must be successfully completed to be eligible for graduation.

a. Score Proficient or Advanced on the PSSA senior retest that will be given 10/25 to 11/5 2010 (Test scores will be available approximately at the end of January 2011)

b. Score at least 400 on the SAT in the area of deficiency

c. Score proficient on the IU-8 assessment

After School Live/Pride & Tradition Update

After School Live/Pride & Tradition has moved to room A228 at GJHS.

After School Live/Pride & Tradition began on September 15th and runs from 2:45-5:15pm and is being offered Monday thru Friday during the 2010-2011 school year.

Penn Highlands Dual Enrollment at GJHS

Students can receive college credits from Penn Highlands Community College when the take courses at GJHS.

If you are enrolled in AP Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, AP Chemistry, AP English, Literature and Composition, College Algebra, Calculus, AP U.S. History I & II (must take both to receive credit), French I & II, Spanish I, II, & III you are eligible to receive college credits for a very affordable fee of $30 per college credit payable to Penn Highland Community College.

All courses are 3 credits except AP Biology and AP Chemistry which are 4 credits.
Mr. Deater is visiting each accepted class at JHS and will discuss details and answer questions.

Deadline for completed forms and check/money order is October 15, 2010.

Wendy's Heisman

The 2010 Wendy's High School Heisman award application is now availalbe online at www.Wendy'sHeisman.com. Eligible seniors who have maintained a B average, participate in a sport and demonstrate active involvement in his/her community are encouraged to apply. Deadline is October 3,2010.
