The Johnstown Salvation Army is now accepting applications for the Harvey & Katherine Supowitz Educational Scholarship. Students awarded the scholarship will be invited to the Johnstown Salvation Army's Annual Civic Dinner in May.

The Scholarship primarily is need-based and will be awarded to students enrolled in or intending to be enrolled in college, university, trade school or other such programs. Weight will be afforded to the applicant's community service including service to or through the Salvation Army.

There will be an IU-8 test in Reading and Math administered on 1/13/12 at 7:50 am. in the cafeteria.

This test meets the PSSA testing requirements for graduation.

There will be a tutoring session specifically designed for the IU-8 test after school starting Monday January 9th through Thursday January 12th. Please contact Jennifer in room A228.

It is highly recommended that students attend the tutoring sessions.

In a continued effort to strengthen and reinforce the lines of communication between the school and home, the Greater Johnstown School District is excited to share the following information regarding the expansion of Powerschool access to mobile phones through the Apple IPhone device.
“In January 2012, Pearson will launch two new mobile apps: PowerSchool for Parents and PowerSchool for Students.
These new apps will allow parents and students to access all the same information they would normally access from a browser, but with the ease and convenience of an app installed on their Apple mobile device.
Automatic login, a family overview, simplified "one-thumb" browsing, and other features make accessing PowerSchool on the go faster and easier than ever before.
The apps will be FREE and available for download from the Apple iTunes App Store. Version 1.0 of the apps will be supported on any Apple iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad running iOS version 4.0 or higher.”

Welding Scholarship Available

The owners of JWF Industries have established a memorial scholarship in honor of their father, John J. Polacek, Senior. In partnership with Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, the first annual John J. Polacek, Senior Memorial Scholarship will be available to new and currently enrolled students in the Welding Technology Program.
Two years of full-time tuition will be awarded (worth $8,470.00 for Cambria County Residents) for an undetermined amount of recipients. The recipient must be able to commute and work for JWF in Johnstown during summer and winter breaks. Following their graduation, the recipient agrees to a minimum 12 month work commitment after graduation. The recipient must have and maintain a 3.0GPA to be eligible.

The Aaron Coyle Award

The Aaron Coyle Award is presented each year to a member of the greater Johnstown High School graduating class in honor and remembrance of Aaron Coyle.
Aaron Coyle was a member of the graduating class of 2001 who was murdered one evening in Moxham before he could graduate. The Moxham Ministerium presents the award to a graduating senior who is continuing on to some form of post-high school education. The award is given to a graduate whose life exemplifies the noblest of human values: faith, hope, love and friendship, and in recognition of his or her willingness to give of his or her time, energy, and talents to affirm the goodness of life. This is not an academic award. The award’s cash value is sent to the recipient’s school of higher education where he or she will attend in the upcoming academic year. UPJ Financial Aid Workshops

The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown’s Financial Aid Office will be offering two workshops designed to educate families on the financial aid process. The workshops are free and available to anyone who is concerned about meeting the costs of postsecondary education. Professionals will discuss the financial aid application and the types and amounts of financial aid available. Staff will be available to address individual concerns and to answer any questions that families may have regarding the financial aid process.

The following workshops will be held in Heritage Hall, located in Pitt-Johnstown’s Living and Learning Center. Please note that each workshop will run from 6:30 p.m.- 8:30 p. m. January 25, 2011 and March 1, 2011. Reservations are not required.

In addition to the financial aid workshops, a FAFSA completion day will be held on Saturday, February 26, 20100 from 8:00 a. m. until 10:30 a.m. to assist students and their families with completing the FAFSA online. Attention 12th Grade Students- The PSSA IU-8 Alternative Assessment Test will be given on Wednesday November 17, 2010. The test is considered an acceptable alternate assessment for students who have not met the graduation requirement of scoring proficient or advanced on the PSSA tests. Also, to help students prepare for the test, the Pride and Tradition and the After School Live programs will offer an opportunity to prepare for the test. Competitive Summer Enrichment Programs

Two free competitive summer enrichment programs, formally called the Governor’s School of Excellence are available to current Sophomores and Juniors. One is a Global Entrepreneurship It’s purpose is to expose students to the topics of entrepreneurship, global networking, team building, project management, leadership and working in a culturally diverse environment. It is held at Lehigh University. The second program is the University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy. It introduces students to the world of health care, including issues of primary care, prevention, public health, career exploration, human growth and development and areas of practice. Transportation costs and some activity costs are not included. The application process is extensive. The application deadline is February 15, 2011.

The Greater Johnstown High School will be holding a Fall Open House on Thursday, September 30th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Students along with their parents/guardians are urged to attend as information regarding student achievement and educational programs will be presented by the faculty and guidance counselors.

Representatives from Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, Mount Aloysius, Saint Francis, and Cambria Rowe will be available in the cafeteria at 5:30 p.m. to answer questions regarding college financial aid.

PSSA Graduation Requirements

Based on school board policy students must complete one of the following criteria, to be eligible for graduation:

1. Students must score proficient or advanced in Reading and Math or pass an alternate assessment (Students must complete the PSSA in Reading and Math to be eligible for an alternate assessment)

2. If a student completes the PSSA in Reading and Math and doesn’t score proficient or advanced, one of the following alternate assessments must be successfully completed to be eligible for graduation.

a. Score Proficient or Advanced on the PSSA senior retest that will be given 10/25 to 11/5 2010 (Test scores will be available approximately at the end of January 2011)

b. Score at least 400 on the SAT in the area of deficiency

c. Score proficient on the IU-8 assessment

Penn Highlands Dual Enrollment at GJHS

Students can receive college credits from Penn Highlands Community College when the take courses at GJHS.

If you are enrolled in AP Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, AP Chemistry, AP English, Literature and Composition, College Algebra, Calculus, AP U.S. History I & II (must take both to receive credit), French I & II, Spanish I, II, & III you are eligible to receive college credits for a very affordable fee of $30 per college credit payable to Penn Highland Community College.

All courses are 3 credits except AP Biology and AP Chemistry which are 4 credits. Mr. Deater is visiting each accepted class at JHS and will discuss details and answer questions.

2. G H Miller Scholarship registration forms are available from Mr. Chick. This scholarship is based on a drawing from all applicants. Students must be accepted as a full time college student to receive the scholarship.

Big "J" Scholarships

The Big “J” Club will be offering three scholarships to senior this year. Any senior who participated in any Big J Activity during the current school year, has a 2.0 or better g.p.a. and who plans to attend a post secondary school immediately after high school is eligible.

Kids’ Chance of Pennsylvania Scholarship is available for students who have a parent who have been killed or seriously injured as a result of a work related accident. Please go to info@idschanceofpa.org or call 610-970-9143 for scholarship application and guidelines. Must complete FAFSA to be eligible. Application deadline is April 15, 2010.

“Spread the news as quick as a flash, The Challenge Program is handing out cash!” Spring is here and the school year is flying by fast. Don’t miss your chance to receive $250.00 at the end of the school year! The Challenge Program is giving out $250.00 checks to sophomores, juniors, and seniors for academic excellence, attendance, academic improvement, and community service. It is not too late to hop on over to your guidance counselor’s office with your completed community service forms for your chance to be presented a $250.00 check at the end of the school year for community service.
